Favorite Downton Quotes
The next item to tackle on my kickoff challenge is to share my favorite quote. (#13 on the list) At the end of that post I promised that I’d share my favorite quotes from Downton Abbey. I think I’ll combine those two tasks today! Here are some of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite shows.
“Wherever I see a problem, you see possibilities.” Mr. Bates said this to Anna in one of the early episodes from the current–and final–season. As a proud member of the Eternal Optimist Society, I approve of this quote!
“My dear, a lack of compassion can be as vulgar as an excess of tears.” The Dowager Countess said this to Mary (I think) early this season. I thought that was a interesting thought. She also said in an earlier season, “Vulgarity is no substitute for wit.” And AMEN to that!
Ah, the Dowager Countess! Doesn’t she have the BEST lines! Here’s another of my favorites from her:
“I am a woman, Mary. I can be as contrary as I choose.” Ha! Yes! I may or may not have said something similar to this to my husband just the other day. Ahem. Moving on…
The relationship between the Dowager Countess and Isobel Crawley is SO real and SO funny! Boy, can they go at it! Here’s one of my favorite snippets from one of their conversations:
Isobel Crawley: “I take that as a compliment.”
Dowager Countess: “I must have said it wrong.”
Ha! Cracks me up every time!
And then we have Daisy and Mrs. Patmore!
- Daisy: Seems like a lot of food, when you think they’re all in mourning.
- Mrs. Patmore: Nothing makes you hungrier or more tired than grief. When my sister died, God rest her soul, I ate my way through four plates of sandwiches at one sitting and slept round the clock.
- Daisy: Did it make you feel better?
- Mrs. Patmore: Not much, but it passed the time.
True that.
We’ll wrap it up today with a sweet quote from Anna. Oh, that today’s brides would take this to heart!
“I’d rather have the right man than the right wedding.”
*happy sigh*
I just love Downton Abbey! What are some of your favorite quotes or favorite moments?

Mr.Carsen’s reaction to Mr. Molesley’s hair dye troubles, “Take steps, Mr. Molesley! Take steps!” ☺️
GOOD ONE, Christie!!!
Oh my! All good ones! I should really watch with a notebook and pen in hand and joy them down. Regrettably, I cannot recall any quotes but that Dowager is a zinger!! Love this show and am sad it’s ending!
I agree! I want to write down the great lines as I’m watching! Such a great show! I’ll be sad when it’s done, but I’m also glad they’re ending it while it’s still good.
