Reading Challenge 2018

Reading Challenge 2018

Ahhhhh!  A new year!  I love the reset a new year presents!  I’m still reflecting on 2017 and thinking about the possibilities 2018 brings, but one thing I HAVE (mostly) nailed down is my reading list for the 2018 Reading Challenge hosted by Anne Bogel of What Should I Read Next and Modern Mrs. Darcy.

Anne hosts a reading challenge every year, and I decided I’d participate this year.  I’ll read a book from each of her 12 categories.  I’ll read a lot MORE books too, but these categories will “force” me to read some books that I might not read otherwise.  Here’s my list.

A Classic You’ve Been Meaning to Read:  Emma by Jane Austen

A book recommended by someone with great taste:  Bread & Wine: A Love Letter to Life Around the Table by Shawna Niequist.  (Recommended by my dear friend Sheila who is on Instagram as @makingthemostofeverydayblog.

A book in translation:  The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery

A book nominated for an award in 2018:  TBD (to be determined)

A book of poetry, a play, or an essay collection:  TBD

A book you can read in a day:  TBD

A book that’s more than 500 pages:  The Civil War – From Fort Sumter to Perryville by Shelby Foote  (I’d love to read all three volumes.  This is the first of the three.)

A book by a favorite author:  The new book by Louise Penny.  It should release this summer. (Three Pines and Inspector Gamache, I’ve missed you!)

A book recommended by a librarian or indie bookseller:  TBD

A banned book:  Catch-22 by Joseph Heller

A memoir, biography, or book of creative nonfiction:  Fields of Battle: Pearl Harbor, the Rose Bowl, and the Boys Who Went to War by Brian Curtis  (I may be fudging just a bit to fit this book in this category, but I’ve been wanting to read this book for over a year now and just haven’t done it.)  (And seeing as how I have football fever right now–GO DAWGS!!!–I’m really itching to dig into this one.)

A book by an author of a different race, ethnicity, or religion than your own:  The Color of Water: A Black Man’s Tribute to His White Mother by James McBride

Hooray for all things books and reading!!!  I’m excited!

Are you doing a reading challenge this year?  Do you have recommendations for my TBD categories?!?  Please comment below!  I’ll be checking to see what you suggest!

Happy New Year!  Thanks for stopping by Out and Back for a few minutes!  Please come again soon!

  1. Great list. Is this from The Modern Mrs. Darcy? I saw it somewhere but the idea of a 500 pager stopped me in my tracks.

If I could recommend a title for your recommended by a librarian slot…The Baker’s Secret. Beautifully, poetically written. I loved it. But listened to it on Audible.

I remember reading Sheila’s review of the bread book. Going to add that to my Goodreads.

    Happy new year!

    1. Yes, Leslie! This is Modern Mrs. Darcy’s Reading Challenge. You could skip that category and add your own! Thanks for the recommendation! That book sounds lovely!
