Chinwag #1: Of Kittens and Wrap Skirts and Recliners

Hey there!  Grab a cup of coffee and pull up a chair!  It’s time for a chinwag!

“Chinwag” is one of those fun words we picked up when we lived in England.  It means “a friendly conversation, a chat.”  I contacted one of my English friends (Hi, Mary!) yesterday to make sure I had the definition and connotation right.  She confirmed that it truly does mean just a chat, not a mean-spirited gossip session.  Yay!

First up I have to tell you about my perfect weekend!  Don’t you love those?!?  Last Friday my husband was off work, and the weather was finally feeling slightly autumn-ish, so we headed out to the range to shoot for a while.  He had fun breaking in two new guns, and I had fun watching HIM having fun with that!  I stuck to the pistols.  My accuracy was less than stellar, but I enjoyed the time anyway.  I’m still fighting a flinch when I fire.  I’m working to get past that, but it’s taking time.

That evening we went to the cinema to see the new Jack Reacher movie.  Okay.  I have to stop right there and ask why in the world did they cast Tom Cruise (for crying out loud) as Jack Reacher?!?  In the books (yes, there are books) Jack Reacher is 6 feet 5 inches tall and 250 pounds!  His sheer size is a HUGE factor in the stories!  ANYWAY.  Back to MY story.  Gene and I went to our local cinema to see the new Jack Reacher movie and discovered that the cinema has upgraded to recliner seating!  WHAT?!?  Seats are now assigned, and/but they are WONDERFUL!  This might not be so great for those of you who go all Sleep Mode as soon as you put your feet up, but we liked them A LOT!

Saturday was another gorgeous day.  We had been invited to a special party in Jacksonville, Florida (more on that in a minute) for that evening, but we decided to head out early and make a day of it.  We ate lunch at Popeye’s (a guilty pleasure of ours!) on the way down and then headed to the Jacksonville Zoo.  We hadn’t visited it in a few years.  We enjoyed walking around and watching the animals and the kids, none of whom we were responsible for!  (I’ve decided that going to the zoo without kids is both a little sad AND a wonderful, beautiful thing!)

That evening we enjoyed a great anniversary party for friends of ours!  Michael and Sheila were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary, and Sheila’s parents were celebrating their 50th!   They renewed their vows, committing to keeping up the hard work that marriage requires.  Yes, I got a little choked up!  This marriage thing is something special, something to treasure, for sure!  I LOVE dressing up, and Gene, bless his heart, was a really good sport about it!  You can read more about the party on Sheila’s blog!

We spent the night at a great hotel in Jacksonville then nipped back up I-95 to take up our posts as greeters at our church and to celebrate our church’s 16th birthday!  God stories and worship abounded!

Then came Monday!  Ah, Monday!  LOL!  I present for your entertainment the condensed version of my leaving for work Monday morning!

  • I decided to wear my amazing, upcycled sari, wrap skirt.  Since it is a wrap skirt, it has long ties.
  • Our kitten repeatedly jumped up, grabbed the ties, and pulled on them, slightly loosening my skirt.
  • I ignored said kitten and focused on gathering my Tervis of tea and travel cup of coffee.
  • The kitten tried to scamper out the front door with me, but my mad ninja skills kicked in and I blocked her escape.  Victory!
  • Also, my skirt got caught in the door.
  • Oh, did I mention I had just touched up my fingernail polish on my right (dominant) hand?
  • I managed to get my skirt out of the door and noticed that it was even more loose now.  (Yeah.  Wait for it!)
  • I juggled my purse and beverages to the car, opened the door, leaned in to put my coffee in a cup holder so I wouldn’t spill it, and poured copious amounts of tea from my Tervis onto the front seat.
  • Simultaneously my skirt…well…let’s just say I had a *slight* wardrobe malfunction at this point!  Thankfully Gene had backed my car into the driveway the night before, so I was shielded from the world by my car door, my car, his truck, and multiple layers of clothing (since it was a brisk 50 degrees, and this is Georgia, so we must bundle up).  I just cracked up laughing!
  • A frantic search for napkins or paper towels then ensued whilst I was trying to get my skirt wrapped again AND trying not to mess up my fingernail polish!  HA!  It really was hysterical!

Oh, goodness!  Sometimes all you can do is laugh!  To close this out I’ll share a photo of the kitten (Mattie) and the sari wrap skirt.

Fall Fashion Find: A Casual Dress

Fall Fashion Find: A Casual Dress

Fall fashion is my favorite!  And the weather here in Coastal Georgia is FINALLY cooperating with the calendar!  Hooray!  Today I’m sharing a great fall fashion find, an affordable, comfortable dress from Old Navy.

I’m 5’6″, and a lot of Old Navy’s dresses are too short for me to wear as a dress.  I have to wear them as a tunic instead.  But this dress is JUST the right length for me!  PLUS it’s an A-line swing dress!  That means it’s forgiving and works well for multiple body shapes.

With the wine colored dress I’m wearing a Land’s End scarf, Target tights, and Payless boots.  This outfit is perfect for

It’s time for Currently!  Here we go!  I am currently…

Discovering:  Well, REdiscovering just how clever the movie Alice Through the Looking Glass is!  I posted a review of the movie when it was in theaters, and now it’s out on Blu-Ray.  This is an excellent movie on every level.  It’s a feast for your eyes, your ears, and your heart!

Celebrating:  Meeting a big goal!  I signed up for the Write 31 Days blogging challenge, and I did it!  I wrote my series, Michael Ann’s Kitchen, and posted every single day of October!  As is typical when we push ourselves to do something hard, I learned a LOT!  I learned tons about blogging in general, WordPress, and the powerful tools available to me via remarkable apps like Canva and Pic Monkey.  I’m exhausted, and I’m exhilarated!

From my birthdaypalooza last week!  More about the cake here.

Starting:  Well, REstarting a concerted effort to make wise food choices and to exercise.  I’ve been off my game for a while, and then Hurricane Matthew threw me for a loop emotionally (even though we made it through just fine).  That emotional exhaustion plus two birthdaypaloozas (mine and my daughter’s) plus the Write 31 Days challenge totally upset my apple cart!  It’s time to right the cart and get back on the wagon.  (Oh dear!  My tired is showing!  Moving on…)

Wearing:  Let’s talk about what I’m NOT wearing.  The temperatures here in Coastal Georgia are STILL pushing 90 degrees.  In November.  Ugh.  So I’m NOT wearing my beloved hoodies, boots, or jackets.  It’s sad really.

(Well, there WAS that weekend camping trip last month near Chattanooga, Tennessee when the temps dipped to just shy of freezing!  Bliss, I tell you!  And, yes, we tent camp.  Stay tuned for more about that trip!)

Googling:  More electric pressure cooker recipes and charts.  I wrote about how much I’m enjoying my pressure cooker several weeks ago, and I’m still loving it.  I’m considering buying an Instant Pot because (1) I’d like to see how it compares to my Farberware pressure cooker, and (2) some days I’d like to have TWO of them to use!

That’s what *I* am up to these days!  How about you?  Let me know in the comment section!

I’m linking up today with Anne of In Residence and Catherine of A Short Blonde.  Be sure to see what THEY are currently up to as well!

Five Things Friday

Five Things Friday

Last weekend was extra awesome!  Here are five amazing things from that awesomeness!

(1) Friday night The Chief and I headed down to Jacksonville, Florida for the evening, and we ate at Fionn MacCool’s Irish Pub.  We do love a good pub!  We liked the atmosphere, the service, AND the food!   Their bread pudding was something special, I tell you.  It’s house-made of danish and doughnuts, covered with buttered pecans and chocolate chips, and topped with a bourbon glaze!  OH, MAN!

(2) Special bonus:  The Jacksonville Fire Department Pipes and Drums (Highland Bagpipe Band) was playing outside the restaurant!

Get Your Pretty On!

Get Your Pretty On!

It’s the most wonderful FASHION time of the year!  Am I right, or am I right?!?  If you’re wanting to update your wardrobe and (A) need some help doing it or (B) want to have a lot of fun while doing it, I happily recommend the Get Your Pretty On Fall Style Challenge!

gypofall16
Click here to read all about it!

I’ve done several of these challenges, and I absolutely love them.  They taught me how to:

  • put together outfits that are trendy AND appropriate for my age
  • shop wisely.  (If I can’t style a piece of clothing at least 3 ways, I don’t buy it.)
  • accessorize confidently with a few, fun, affordable pieces.

PLUS I made a lot of great fashion friends with whom I’m still in touch!  (From all over the place, y’all!)

This challenge works well for all ages and body types.  You can spend as much or as little as you like on the clothes.

Click the link above to see how it all works!  Here are a few photos of my outfits from a previous fall challenge.

Let me know if you have any questions by commenting below!  Happy shopping!

One Carly, Three Ways

One Carly, Three Ways

I *love* dresses!  I wear them all the time, year ’round. Same goes for LuLaRoe!  I love my LuLaRoe leggings and maxi skirts and wear THEM year ’round too.

When LuLaRoe released their new Carly dress, my heart went pitter-pat!  I bought one right away, and here’s how I’ve styled it.

Here it is, plain and simple.  I just added a necklace that I bought from Craft by World Market (which you should totally keep an eye on, by the way).

Style Perspectives: How Would YOU Wear It?

Style Perspectives: How Would YOU Wear It?

Today I’m linking up with The Blended Blog for some fashion fun!  They’re hosting another round of Style Perspectives, and this time the formula is a blazer + tank/t-shirt + jeans + sneakers.  This is an easy look that totally works for my lifestyle!

image

I’m slowly building up blazer options in my wardrobe.  This is one of my favorites!  A soft, comfy, striped blazer from Old Navy.  I rolled up the sleeves to give it a more relaxed look and then paired it with an orange, v-neck tank top that I’ve had for a while.

The jeans are Riders by Lee brand (curvy fit) from Walmart.  One day I’ll invest in higher quality denim, but these are really pretty great, especially for the price!

And my sneakers!  Ahhhh, my sneakers are from Fit Flop!  Yep!  Anyone who’s around me very long KNOWS how much I love my Fit Flops!  I have several pairs of Fit Flop sandals in my closet, and they feature prominently in my wardrobe in all but the coldest months.  (And those are precious few here in Coastal Georgia!)  To make a long story really short, Fit Flops make my feet, hips, and back VERY happy!  You can read all about the science involved here.

For accessories I added some groovy, orange earrings from Charming Charlie.  (I’m overdue for a visit to that lovely shop, now that I think of it!)  I’m also wearing an orange/gold bangle that I picked up somewhere along the line, and my gold, boyfriend watch.

This is an outfit I could (and will!) easily wear to work, church, a casual date, or the supermarket.

How about you?  Is this a fashion formula you already wear or one that you could see yourself wearing?  How would YOU wear it?!?  Comment here or link up with The Blended Blog!

Style Perspectives: Spring Sweaters

Style Perspectives: Spring Sweaters

My friends over at The Blended Blog are hosting Week 6 of their Style Perspectives series.  This has been a fun way to see how different ladies style the same general “assignment.”  This week we’re styling spring sweaters + jeans + flats.  Sounds like fun, right?  Right!

Springtime here in Savannah means a high likelihood of 20-degree temperature fluctuations each day, so it’s all about LAYERS!   Even when temps go up and stay there, we still often need quick layers to combat the air conditioning indoors.  That’s why you’ll usually see me with a sweater year ’round!  (Check my purse!  That’s usually where I stuff it!)

In my first outfit I’m wearing a fun, boho-feel, wrap shirt with a cardigan.  I just purchased this shirt last night at New York & Co. at my local Tanger Outlet Mall, and I’m looking forward to wearing it a LOT!  Here I’m wearing it with a bright blue cardigan and my trusty, red, Clark’s flats.  These shoes feel amazing!  I recommend them for folks who like or need a deep toe box.  (Arthritis, anyone?)  I like Clark’s European look, but I know some folks think their shoes are clunky looking.  Ah well!

image

In this second look I’m wearing a navy and white striped t-shirt with a red cardigan and my glittery gold princess flats!  I decided to add gold hoop earrings, bracelets, and tassel necklace to play up the whole “gold” thing.  Adding a fun scarf–nautical, maybe?–would be an easy way to change this up.

image

The sweater + jeans + flats formula is a super simple recipe for great outfits.  You could mix and match all day with just a few basic pieces.  For this spring I’d like to add pink flats and a pink cardigan to my wardrobe.  I don’t wear a lot of pink, but I’d like to use it as an accent color.  Those two items would add a LOT of fun, new twists to the basic pieces I already have!

Is this an outfit formula that YOU like?  Leave a comment and let me know!

Style Perspectives: How Would YOU Wear It? #1

Style Perspectives: How Would YOU Wear It? #1

A dear friend of mine is one of the ladies who is a part of The Blended Blog, a lovely place to visit and hang out for a while!  Today they’re kicking off a fun fashion series where everyone gets to show how they would wear _______.  This week they’re showing how they would style a wrap, so I thought I’d link up with them and show you one of my favorite looks from this winter!

DSC_2615

I have two capes, both from Cracker Barrel.  (Yep.  You read that correctly! Cracker Barrel!)  My mom gave me a fawn colored one with a fur collar, and I liked it so much I went back and got this one too!  I love the bright red, don’t you?  (Especially against that lovely winter grass color.  Ugh.)

So for this look I’m wearing a blue, marled, swing dress from Old Navy, my favorite pair of LuLaRoe leggings, and my beloved black boots from Payless.  And then I topped it with the red cape!  I feel über feminine in this outfit!

I especially like the layers of color around the hems of the cape and the dress.

DSC_2625

The ruffles around the top always make me smile!  The neckline is just right.  It keeps my neck nice and warm but doesn’t choke me at all.

RedCape

I think I’ll be able to use the cape from time to time even as the temps warm up since it’s made of fairly lightweight fleece.  It will be nice to toss on over a t-shirt and jeans when I see a movie or go out for an evening date when evenings are still chilly.

So that’s my style perspective for wearing a wrap these days!  I’m looking forward to wearing some of my lighter-weight wraps as we’re working into warmer, springtime weather.

(Am I the only one who practically has to wear a parka to prevent frostbite in a movie theater?!?  Sheesh!)
